GAGAN
Scope status
This is a draft system note built from references already present in the vault.
Boundary:
- This note does not verify regional performance figures, dates, coverage claims, or implementation-status statements against external source material.
- It consolidates what the vault currently says about GAGAN and marks those statements as provisional where needed.
Working definition
Within the current vault, GAGAN is treated as the Indian regional implementation of satellite-based augmentation with importance for regional civil-aviation use and broader Asia-focused SBAS deployment discussion.
Current in-vault references
GAGAN is currently referenced in:
Provisional in-vault profile
The current vault describes GAGAN as having:
- India-centered coverage with surrounding-region relevance
- a growing regional role in the SBAS landscape
- a cost-effectiveness framing relative to other systems
- value as an Asia-focused comparison point alongside MSAS
These profile elements are still provisional until supported by dedicated source extraction.
Current claims already present elsewhere in the vault
The following claims appear in existing notes and should be treated as provisional until verified:
- GAGAN covers India and surrounding regions
- GAGAN is operational from 2011
- GAGAN is a growing system within the regional SBAS landscape
- GAGAN has a cost-effective implementation profile
Relationship to civil aviation use
In current vault structure, GAGAN matters because it extends the regional picture from U.S./Europe/Japan toward India and broader Asia-relevant deployment questions.

Relationship to standards and source scaffolds
Current source anchors that support a verified GAGAN note:
- Source - GAGAN SBAS Operation — primary dedicated source anchor; verified signals from ICAO APAC ITF/7 IP05b (May 2025), AAI public documentation
- Source - SBAS Service Providers — service-provider family anchor
- Source - ICAO Annex 10 Volume I GNSS SBAS — ICAO SARPs routing
- Source - ICAO APAC GBAS-SBAS Implementation Forums — regional coordination context; ITF/7 IP05b is the source
- SBAS Standards Source Matrix — claim-routing matrix for standards/source families
Open provenance questions
- Which GAGAN claims in SBAS-Systems-by-Region-MOC are descriptive placeholders versus source-grounded facts?
- Which current Asia-focused statements in the vault should cite dedicated regional documentation rather than generic SBAS standards scaffolds?
- Should a future GAGAN source stack distinguish implementation history, service area, and civil-aviation deployment?
Source anchors
Current source scaffolds relevant to this page include:
- Source - SBAS Service Providers — institutional source-family anchor for SBAS service-provider definitions and commitments.
- Source - ICAO Annex 10 Volume I GNSS SBAS — ICAO SARPs routing.
- SBAS Standards Source Matrix — claim-routing matrix for standards/source families.
This page remains in-vault-synthesis-only. Service-provider claims need direct extraction from official AAI/ISRO/GAGAN documentation before being treated as verified.
